Loughborough Boat Club
As this year's regatta season approaches its close Loughborough Boat Club have managed to pick up another string of wins including an impressive victory at Cambridge in the Women's Novice Coxed Fours. Emily Clark, Ruth Amos, Sarah Mee and Amanda Hibell, coxed by Nick Robinson, came through the early rounds with some comfortable wins but then had to fight it out with Peterborough in the final. Although the crews appeared evenly matched in the first part of the race the Loughborough crew attacked hard around the halfway point and crossed the line 1¼ lengths in front. Sarah Mee also achieved a win in the Women's Junior Single Sculls, beating her Huntingdon rival by 2½ lengths.
There were further wins for Mee in the same category at Oxford City and at Bewdley where the Club picked up a total of four wins, two of them in the most exciting races of the two-day regatta. The Men's Veteran B Coxed Four of Keith Hudson, Jerome Mason, Peter Hepworth and Simon Hill took on the home crew from Bewdley in the sprint event. Both crews crossed the line together and the judges declared a dead heat so it was back to the start to do it all again. Urged on by cox Nick Robinson, they showed their determination to win and just got the edge at the finish. In Women's Senior 2 Double Sculls Ruth Amos and Clare Wilson also dead heated and the second attempt was almost as close with tense moments as they waited for the official decision declaring them winners. In the longer 1000m race Hudson and Mason were joined in the Veteran B Coxed Fours by Steve Pladon and Alan Perry with Charlie Horner in the cox's seat. They were up against Bewdley in the final and again managed a satisfying victory over the home crew.
As Club Captain Keith Hudson commented, "We are having an excellent season and are hoping for a few more wins in the last regatta of the season at York this weekend. If anyone has been inspired by our fantastic Olympic victories to give the sport a go, we would love to see them.
