Loughborough Boat Club

Loughborough Boat Club members clocked up three wins at their own regatta held at the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont. The event, held jointly with the National Veterans Regatta, is held on the six lane 1000 metre course with races taking place at four minute intervals throughout the day.

Junior members Matt Day and Jakob Melchior showed the way when they won the Men’s Senior 3 Double Sculls in convincing style. They took on their senior opponents to cross the line over three seconds in front of Norwich and an impressive 26 seconds ahead of the next closest crew from Nottingham Boat Club. This was Day’s first win at this level marking the end of his Novice status.

The Women’s squad added to the wins with two victories in the Single Sculls events. First up was Isobel Jones – another of the Club’s junior members racing successfully at senior level. Jones took a commanding lead over second placed Riley from Hollingworth Lake in the Senior 4 category to win by nearly 10 seconds.  Then Kerry Trembling in the Senior 3 event got a tight hold on the leading position and came in 6 seconds ahead of nearest rival Feegel from Nottingham Boat Club.

The regatta is run by Club volunteers many of whom manage to fit some racing in alongside the numerous jobs that need to be done at such a major event. Club President Kevin Carswell commented “Our members put in a great deal of work to make this event happen and we are particularly indebted to Amanda Benjamin who took over as Regatta Secretary this year – it’s a demanding role and she did an excellent job”.
