Loughborough Boat Club

Thirteen regatta wins and a national medal in just one season of racing was enough for Loughborough Boat Club member Clare Wilson to clinch the Club's Achievement Award presented at their annual dinner last week. Club Captain Keith Hudson, in announcing Clare as the winner, said how he was constantly impressed by her sheer enthusiasm and commitment to the sport and her ability to take on race after race. "Clare had to win more than thirty races when you take into account heats and semi-finals, she also won both sculling and rowing, in an eight, a four and a double, in seniors and in veterans. Clare has proved herself to be a highly versatile competitor".

The Sports Council Trophy for the most promising junior was, unusually, shared by five youngsters. Henry Yates from Zouch, Nick Ratcliffe from Quorn, and Amy Lane, Carly Bilsborough and Duncan Harris from Shepshed will be entering their first races in a few weeks time. Keith Hudson explained, "I felt all five deserved the award as they have all shown real promise since taking up the sport last year, and they have been sufficiently dedicated to keep up the training over the winter despite the difficulties faced in getting out on the water due to floods. I am sure they will all do well, and most important, they really enjoy it".

The award for the most promising rower went to Pauline Barrett who has already achieved early success in rowing and is hoping to add some sculling wins this season. Marcus Joy was awarded the Martin Hewitt Memorial Trophy for commitment to land training. "Training off the water is a crucial part of gaining the fitness and strength needed to compete successfully, and Marcus is always willing to spend that extra hour in the gym," said the Club Captain.

The Club is now preparing for the start of the regatta season with entries at Leicester on Sunday 22nd April. Plans for the year include entries at many regional regattas, the National Championships and at Henley.
