Loughborough Boat Club

Loughborough Boat Club’s ‘Head of the Soar’ race saw two dead heats this year and a total of eight wins for the home club. The annual race is in pursuit style with times being recorded for each boat starting at Kegworth and finishing 3km upstream near the clubhouse at County Bridge, Hathern.

 

In the Women’s Senior 4 Single Sculls it was two of the Club’s own members who dead heated with both Sophie Myers and Caroline Lomax recording a time of 15 mins 51 secs. Another club member to dead heat was Simon Hill in the Men’s Novice Single Sculls, finishing in the same time of 14 mins 30 secs as Doncaster Schools sculler Nevett.

 

Amanda Benjamin got her first win in a single scull when she completed the course in 15 mins 37 secs nearly a minute ahead of her nearest rival Gries from Burton Leander in the Women’s Novice event.  Andy Martin also achieved a large winning margin beating a Leicester sculler by 43 secs in a time of 13 mins 37 secs. Nick Logan was the fastest single sculler of the day winning the Senior 2 category and the Edmondson Trophy in an impressive 12 mins 46 secs.

 

In the Men’s Senior 3 Double Sculls Marcus Joy teamed up with junior member Matthew Day to win in a time of 12 mins 53 secs – 22 secs in front of the Trent opposition. The Men’s Veteran C Coxed 4 gave another win to Simon Hill and Andy Martin when they were joined by Club Captain Keith Hudson and Neil Martin. Ably steered by cox Danny Martin they finished in 12 mins 37 secs - 20 secs ahead of next placed Leicester .

 

Doncaster Schools were awarded the Victor Ludorum trophy, donated by John Taylor Bell Foundry, for the most successful visiting club of the day. As their coach commented “ We really enjoyed the day – it’s not an easy course but it gave us plenty of useful practice at steering in race conditions”.
