Loughborough Boat Club
Three Loughborough Boat Club rowers achieved a double victory at Shrewsbury Regatta, winning in both the Saturday 1000m race and again on the Sunday in the 600m sprint. Caroline Lomax, at stroke, Marcus Joy and Mary Carswell, together with Nottingham Boat Club’s Phil Robinson, coxed by Annie Baillie, dominated the Mixed Senior 2 Coxed Fours event. Over the 1000m course they took an early lead from fellow finalists Stratford, put in a strong push at the half way point and pulled away to secure a two length margin at the finish line. The Loughborough crew faced Stratford again on the Sunday, beating them convincingly to win through to the final against Liverpool Victoria. As Club Chairman, Kevin Carswell commented, "Our four had a blistering start and Liverpool just couldn’t get back in touch. They certainly didn’t give up and pushed us hard but we were one and a half lengths ahead by the line."
Also in action at Shrewsbury, in their first ever race, were youngsters Amy Lane and Carly Bilsborough in the Women’s J15 Double Sculls. Despite coming up against the far more experienced Northwich double in the final they put in a promising performance with Carly steering an excellent course on a difficult stretch of river, and Amy putting in a consistent pace at stroke.
The Club almost achieved another double at the prestigious Nottingham City Regatta when the Women's Elite Quad of stroke Emily Clarke, Fiona Richmond, Rachel Scott and Anna Henderson just missed out on a win on the Saturday when they lost their early lead over the 2000m Holme Pierrepont course to be beaten by Llandaff. On the Sunday they got a good start again and were fractionally out in front at the 500m mark but this time they managed to increase their lead to beat second placed Leicester by over 3 seconds at the 2000m finish.
