Loughborough Boat Club

As Saint George is the patron saint of Germany as well as of England it seemed rather fitting that a win should come for Loughborough Boat Club on Saint George’s Day from a young member who is a native of Hamburg . Perhaps this is what spurred on 17 year old Jakob Melchior or perhaps the England flags flying from houses along the Nottingham road out of Loughborough that morning imbued him with the fighting spirit of Saint George! Certainly all the Loughborough Boat Club juniors competing in the Nottingham City Regatta on Saint George’s Day fought extremely hard, making for some very exciting racing over the six lane National Watersports Centre course at Holme Pierrepont.

Tom Lange and Matt Day rowed well in their J16 Double Scull final. They were 2nd at the halfway point showing good strength and technique only to be pipped at the post by a fine sprint from the Nottingham Schools boat just before the line, placing them a close 3rd with just 4 seconds between the first three boats. Isabel Jones showed determination and great promise for the season when she battled it out in the finals of both the Junior and Senior 3 Single Sculls.

But it was Jakob Melchior who won a trophy for Loughborough on the day. Despite being in 2nd place at the halfway point he showed a combination of fitness and a will to fight which moved him through the opposition to win convincingly in the Junior Single Sculls in a time of 3 mins 42 secs
