Loughborough Boat Club

At Ironbridge, Welbeck Defence 6th Form College - which joined forces with the Boat Club after their recent move to Woodhouse – got its first wins from its Loughborough base.

It was Lauren Parr, Grace Wentworth, Sophie Leonard and Zoe Gent that got the first win for Welbeck when they teamed up with four Boat Club rowers Sophie Myers at stroke, Isobel Jones, Rosy Dixon and Carly Bilsbrough in the Women’s Novice 8. Coxed by Marcus Joy they gained a convincing win over Stoke Rowing Association in the 1000 metre final.

The Welbeck Mens’ crew also came good in the Novice 8 when Rob Charlesworth, Mark Roberts, Adam Durant, John Kerr, Ben Woods, Tom Blackburn, Tom Waite and Sam Guy beat Stourport by one and a quarter lengths over the 500 metre course.

Another novice win for Loughborough came in the Women’s Single Sculls when Amanda Benjamin beat her Warrington opposition by a length then junior members Matt Day and Jakob Melchior continued their winning streak when they beat Hollingworth Lake in the Men’s Senior 3 Double Sculls.

But the best performance of the weekend came from Dave Marshall who showed that the ‘Most Promising Rower’ award he achieved earlier in the year was certainly not misplaced. On the Saturday over the 1000 metre course he beat the Gloucester sculler in the final of the Senior 4 Single Sculls and then the Llandaff sculler in the Senior 3 event, both by a comfortable margin of 3 lengths. He then moved up to the Senior 2 category on the Sunday in the 500 metre race and finished a length ahead in the final of his Stourport opponent.
