Loughborough Boat Club

Two Loughborough Boat Club youngsters had their first taste of competitive coxing at Northwich Regatta - and had to race against each other!

Danny Martin, aged 12 from Syston, was lined up against Corin Rennick-Egglestone, 13, from Loughborough, when a Loughborough crew raced a Loughborough and Marlow composite in the final of the Mixed Senior 1 Coxed Fours. The Loughborough crew of Caroline Lomax at stroke, Keith Hudson, Marcus Joy and Mary Carswell, coxed by Corin, were neck and neck with Danny’s composite crew of stroke Ollie Kortang, Jerome Mason, Hel Podmore, and Marlow’s Charlotte Winterson for the first 250m of the 500m sprint race. But a strong push from the Loughborough crew took them ahead to gain a length’s advantage by the line.

Corin not only gained a win in his first event but he also went on to cox another winning Loughborough crew. This time he lined up against Liverpool Victoria in the final of the Women’s Veteran B Coxed Fours. Two members of the winning crew from the Mixed Fours, Caroline Lomax, again at stroke and Mary Carswell at bow, were joined by Hel Podmore and Jo Coulson. They got away to a good start taking an important early lead and continued to edge ahead to take the race by 1½ lengths.

Loughborough’s Mixed Elite Eight of Simon Hill, Neil Martin, Andy Martin, Jerome Mason, Caroline Lomax, Hel Podmore, Jo Coulson and Mary Carswell, coxed by Corin, narrowly missed out when they were beaten by just quarter of a second by home club Northwich in a £500 sprint knockout challenge.
