Loughborough Boat Club

Fate seemed to be with at least one of the Loughborough Boat Club crews at Bewdley Regatta when the Women’s Senior 2 Coxed Four of stroke Caroline Lomax, Ruth Amos, Jo Coulson and Mary Carswell, coxed by Danny Martin, triumphed in a gruelling four round competition in sweltering temperatures. As Club Vice-Captain Mary Carswell explained, "We realised a few days before racing that we all shared the same Leo star sign. But it was only after we won that we saw that the stars forecast for that day said we would be ‘invincible’ – and that’s exactly how we felt in each of the races!". The crew won through against Warrington, Warwick and Ross to meet Avon County in the final of the 700m race. Having had a tight race with Warwick where they won by just 2 feet they expected to have to work hard in the final. However, they took an early lead, following up with a push to gain a psychological advantage over their opposition. They continued to pull away and crossed the line with clear water between the boats and a verdict of one and a half lengths.

Ruth Amos gained another trophy during the two-day regatta when she beat off rivals Buckley from Evesham and Brind from Reading to gain a comfortable win over the longer 900m course in the Women’s Junior Single Sculls. Cox, Danny Martin also made it a double when he steered home the winning Men’s Veteran B Coxed Four of stroke, Jerome Mason, Chris Logan, Keith Hudson and Neil Martin. Despite this being the first race for this particular crew they looked comfortable from the start of the final against Quintin and dominated right through to the line.

Jerome Mason and Chris Logan also came home with two trophies for the weekend’s work. Coxless Pairs are notoriously difficult to steer and the river Severn at Bewdley with its bends and shallows is a testing course. The Loughborough crew hit some problems with steering on the first day of the Men’s Senior 1 event which lost them the final against Warwick. They were particularly pleased then to find on winning through to the semi-final in a tight race with Minerva Bath on day two, that they were to face Warwick again in the final. They made the most of their opportunity for revenge, steering an excellent course and coming over the line one and a half lengths in front.
