Loughborough Boat Club

The River Soar at Hathern might not at first glance seem as inspiring a location as the rowing lake at the Athens Olympics but British success at rowing certainly inspired a group of young people to give the sport a try last weekend. As part of Charnwood Borough Council’s summer activity programme, Loughborough Boat Club again played host to a group of youngsters keen to find out if this was the sport for them. And to prove the success of the scheme, previous participants - now seasoned competitors - were there to help them out.

The Club’s Women’s Coach, and organiser of the Summer Activity sessions, George Jones commented, “Many of our younger members have come through these taster sessions so we are always keen to be part of the Charnwood scheme. Our Olympic medal wins just show the strength of the sport in the UK and particularly the growth of women’s rowing and sculling. But it’s not only youngsters that can take up the sport - so if anyone else has been inspired by Athens then they are welcome to come down to the club at County Bridge , Hathern on a Saturday or Sunday morning to find out more.”
